A newly built home with a compact garden required a thoughtful design approach to meet the client’s desire for a modern yet characterful outdoor space, with distinct areas for dining and relaxation.
The garden was carefully structured into two defined zones: one for dining and one for lounging. These areas were separated by a lush planting bed, through which a long stepping stone path was laid. This pathway not only created a clear visual and physical division but also offered an engaging experience as one moved between the spaces.
To complement the red brick of the house, a smooth grey limestone was selected. Its subtle fossil inclusions, such as ammonites, added natural interest while the neutral grey tones provided a timeless contrast, balancing the warmth of the surrounding materials and enhancing the contemporary aesthetic.
Warmth and texture were introduced through the use of cedar battens, which were crafted into bespoke fencing, a gate, and a storage unit. These rich tones were echoed in the dining table and a gas fire feature positioned between the lounge sofas, creating cohesion throughout the space.
A focal point feature wall was designed with a recessed, geometric pattern that interacts with both natural and artificial light, casting dynamic shadows that shift throughout the day. This wall was paired with a statement planter in muted, verd de Gris tones to anchor the visual composition.
Large feature planters housing specimen shrubs—including a striking cloud-pruned topiary—added sculptural interest. These were complemented by carefully selected trees and shrubs in the borders, underplanted with a restrained palette to maintain harmony and elegance across the garden.
