Tom Hill was deeply honoured to be selected as one of the international designers invited to create a garden for the prestigious 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Expo in China. The Expo’s theme, “Green Life, Beautiful Home,” celebrated horticulture and the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
These gardens, part of the International Designers Creative Gardens collection, were constructed to remain on-site as lasting examples of global design excellence.
Origami-Inspired Garden Design
Dimensions: 15 x 15 metres
Tom’s garden was inspired by the art and therapeutic benefits of origami, a practice known to support mental well-being by reducing stress and aiding mental health. Rather than beginning with traditional sketches, Tom developed his concept entirely through paper folding, allowing the design to evolve organically from the tactile process itself.
The result was a modern, stylish, and functional outdoor space designed for both relaxation and social interaction. At the heart of the garden sits a geometric gazebo, serving as the central living area and connecting the various zones of the garden.
Behind the gazebo lies a tranquil retreat designed for rest and bathing, while the front section offers a visually engaging space for entertaining. The geometric theme is echoed throughout the garden in its structures, furniture, and bespoke sculptures.
A key feature is the integrated water system, which not only enhances the garden’s aesthetics but also provides a sustainable water source. Rainwater is collected via the canopy, redirected through a cantilever into a pool, and then stored in a tank. This tank supplies water to a central bowl via a sculptural feature, creating a renewable irrigation system.
The planting scheme is restrained yet natural, with drifts of grasses weaving through meandering paths. Moss is used in custom features to add texture and softness. Bold foliage contrasts with vibrant bursts of colour from trees and shrubs such as Prunus, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Hydrangeas. Perennials like Irises, Hostas, and Peonies add seasonal interest to the borders.
Two sides of the garden are enclosed with hedging, punctuated by feature screens, while the remaining sides are open to allow full public visibility of the design.
Reflecting on the experience, Tom shared: “It was a great privilege to take part in such a significant exposition. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and being able to visit Beijing and see my garden in person made it all the more special.”
